Far Eastern University snatched its fourth straight win to end the first round of eliminations.
Far Eastern University pounced on University of Sto. Tomas’ sluggish game to carve out a cakewalk, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20, victory Saturday to end the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament first round eliminations with a four-game winning run at the MOA Arena.
The Lady Tamaraws improved their record to 5-2 while handing the Tigresses their third straight defeat for a 2-5 card.
No FEU player scored in double figures but setter Kyle Negrito did a great job distributing the offense with 22 excellent sets. Toni Rose Basas and Celine Domingo scored eight points each while skipper Bernadeth Pons and Negrito combined for 14 markers for the Lady Tams, who punished the Tigresses with 12 service aces.
The win also snapped the Morayta-based squad's two-game losing skid against their Espana-based neighbor.
“Sabi ko sa mga players ko, hindi kami nanalo sa UST last year. Kaya naman natin mag-bounce back follow instructions lang, follow ang game plan then execute,” said FEU coach George Pascua.
The Tigresses led early in the first and second sets but allowed the Lady Tams to mount blistering fightbacks in both frames. With momentum on their side FEU controlled the third set on its way to a quick 88-minute victory.
Carla Sandoval finished with 12 points while Sisi Rondina, who averaged 23.33 points per game heading into the match, was limited to a season-low 11 points for UST, which threw 29 points on errors.
