Sa ngayon 'yung determinationa manalo, pang UAAP na -- De La Salle University head coach Ramil de Jesus
Aside from earning a morale-boosting win against archrival Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University players regained the trust of head coach Ramil De Jesus.
The way the two-time defending champion Lady Spikers played Saturday made them worthy of playing in the UAAP.
They’re not the same ‘pambarangay’ team that they were a week ago.
DLSU bounced back from a setback with a 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20, win over the Lady Eagles Saturday at the close of the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament first round of eliminations at the Mall of Asia Arena.
De Jesus praised his wards for rediscovering the DLSU brand of play after a disappointing four-set upset loss to Adamson University, a team the Lady Spikers dominated for a decade.
The mentor gave a scathing comment on his team after that match, calling their performance ‘pambarangay’.
But De Jesus was at least smiling this time.
“Um, sa ngayon 'yung determination manalo, pang UAAP na,” said De Jesus, whose wards won their fifth in seven outings to tie Far Eastern University. "Yung laro kasi, parang roller-coaster, andoon na tapos biglang bibitaw, pag malayo hahabol. May kulang, yung pang-end game ang kulang."
He was particularly impressed with the way his team climbed out of a deep hole in the third frame. Down 11-21, the Lady Spikers uncorked 10 unanswered points to tie the frame and even held a 24-22 lead before fading in the closing stretch.
“Nakita ko 'yung determination nilang makahabol. 'Yun nga lang medyo kinapos pa rin sa dulo kahit nandoon nu’ng last na,” said De Jesus.
The mentor admitted that he made a mistake during that stretch when he subbed out Michelle Cobb for CJ Saga.
“Siguro, mistake ko 'yun dahil andoon na 'yung momentum, nagpalit ako ng setter, so hindi nakapag-deliver 'yung setter, well ganoon talaga eh. Wala na sa two points eh,” he said.
Overall, De Jesus liked what he saw.
“Well ito yung gusto kong makita sa kanila. Kasi palagi kong sinasabi sa kanila 'yun na hindi ko nararamdaman 'yung character ng bawat isa inside the court. Siguro, nararamdaman ko individual, hindi as a group, as a team,” he said. “Ngayon, as a team talaga.”
