Things got so bad for Ateneo, BDL was a first-ball option
"I almost received kanina. Coach Sherwin was asking me 'can you receive?'... uhm I guess?" De Leon said.

Ateneo lost three sets to La Salle Saturday in the UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball tournament by an average of just six points.

The Lady Eagles gave up 16 aces in four sets, which comes out as four aces per set.

If Ateneo didn't do a comically-terrible job with its reception against the reigning two-time UAAP champions, the rivalry game between the Lady Eagles and the Lady Spikers would have been way, way different.

"Our score isn't too low. I mean, lumalaban di ba? It wasn't bad," middle blocker Bea De Leon said.

"It means kayang-kaya, receive lang talaga. 16 aces, wala di ba. That's giving away four points [per set] right away," she added.

The Lady Eagles obviously missed libero Dani Ravena against the Lady Spikers, a player that could've helped in Ateneo's reception woes.

However, the Katipunan-based squad is not about to put all their problems on one player alone.

"Very critical talaga yung loss ni Dani but what can you do? Sabi ni coach Sherwin hindi ka pwede maghanap ng wala," De Leon said.

"The test of a good team is if kapag wala ang isa, dapat kaya pa rin. Ganun eh," she added.

The problem of Ateneo's poor reception got so out of hand that the coaching staff even considered De Leon as an option to get the first ball.

De Leon is a middle blocker and they are generally protected when it comes to receiving the ball.

"I almost received kanina. Coach Sherwin was asking me 'can you receive?'... uhm I guess?" De Leon said.

"But wala, ganun talaga," she added.

With the whole team struggling, De Leon couldn't help but feel helpless at times as Ateneo's attacks were compromised due to poor first balls.

"It's a bit frustrating because all you can really do is try to lift them up with your words, with your encouragement," she said.

"But even you eh di ba, it's like double the fight. You fight for them and you fight for yourself. It takes twice as much energy. But you know, stick to the positives. We'll be fine," De Leon added.
