UPSET ALERT -- University of the East pulled of a stunner when the Lady Warriors beat Adamson University in five sets to snap a 13-game losing skid since last season.
Graduating player Shaya Adorador proved that volleyball is not just about power as she led University of the East to a shocking upset win over Adamson University in a thrilling 25-22, 22-25, 14-25, 25-20, 15-13, win Sunday.
Adorador waxed-hot in the fifth set as she scored seven points off six soft off speed hits and a kill block for the Lady Warriors’ first win in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Recto-based squad snapped a six-game losing skid and 13 in a row overall since last season while dragging the Lady Falcons, who came off a huge upset over two-time defending champion De La Salle University last week, to its fourth loss in seven games.
The victory is only the third win of the Lady Warriors in three seasons - all at the expense of the San Marcelino-based squad.
“Well bago ako pumalit sa kanila kasi pinapanood ko naman ‘yung game nila, I saw yung… andun na yung skill nila, andun na yung talent nila, ita-tap na lang talaga eh. Parang tingin ko napigil yung talent nila, hindi malabas nang husto yung galing nila,” said UE interim coach Rod Roque, who replaced resigned mentor Francis Vicente a week ago.
“Noong nag-take over ako, wala na akong binago sa sistema. Sinabi ko nalang sa kanila: ‘believe in yourself. May skill na kayo, pare-pareho kayo ng skill. Malakas ang palo, ang ganda ng receive, bilis ng galaw, nandun na. All you have to do patunayan iyon.’ Ginagawa naman nila,” added Roque, who is also UE’s representative to the UAAP Board.
Mary Anne Mendrez scored 12 points, all on attacks, while Adorador got 11 markers off 10 hits and a block while Judith Abil and Seth Rodriguez combined for 17 points for the Lady Red Warriors, who received 52 free points off Adamson's atrocious number of errors.
Libero Kat Arado was superb on manning the floor as she tallied 32 excellent receptions and posted 24 digs while setter Laizah Bendong had 38 excellent sets for UE.
UE raced to an 11-5 lead in the fifth frame on a Mary Anne Mendrez kill. The Lady Falcons fought back behind Mylene Paat’s heroics. Adamson closed the gap, 14-13, saving two match points on a Paat kill and a hit by rookie Chiara Permentilla.
But the Lady Warriors won’t be denied of sweet victory with Adorador tipping the ball away from her blockers to outwit the stunned Lady Falcons.
Paat scored 23 points including 20 off kills while Eli Soyud and Joy Dacoron finished with 11 and 10 markers, respectively, for Adamson, which threw away 16 errors in the fourth set.
Jema Galanza and Permentilla, who both sat out the opening set together with Soyud, finished with nine and eight points, respectively, for the Lady Falcons, whose 59 attacks off Fenela Emnas' 52 excellent sets went down the drain because of their agonizing errors.
