UAAP VOLLEYBALL: NU moves up for a share of the lead

Bryan Bagunas registered 19 points to power National University to its fifth straight win.
National University showcased its firepower as five players scored in double digits in the Bulldogs’ 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23 victory over University of the Philippines Sunday for a share of the lead in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
National team member Bryan Bagunas led the Bulldogs’ assault to cap their first round campaign with five straight victories. He scored but one of his 19 points off attacks for NU, which joined three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University and Far Eastern University at the top with 6-1 win-loss slates.
James Natividad added 17 points while Fauzi Ismail and skipper Francis Saura chipped in 14 and 12 markers, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
Kim Malabunga had five kill blocks to highlight his 11-point outing for NU, which frustrated the Fighting Maroons’ attackers with 14 kill blocks.
Kim Dayandante distributed the ball well for the Bulldogs as he talied 29 excellent sets.
UP absorbed its fifth loss in seven games.
Wendel Miguel scored all of his 17 points on attacks while John Millete finished with 17 markers as well including 15 from kills in a losing effort for the Diliman-based squad.
