National University closed the opening round on top of the standings.
National University saw some scary moments during the match but held on to submit the pesky University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17, Sunday to get back on the winning track in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Six-foot-5 Jaja Santiago led the way for the Lady Bulldogs, who bounced back from a four-set loss to Far Eastern University last Wednesday to take the solo lead with 6-1 win-loss record at the close of the first round.
Santiago scored 17 point with all but one coming off attacks while Risa Sato got 10 markers for NU, which posted its best start since the Final Four era and duplicated its best first round record it marked in Season 76. Jasmine Nabor scored six points and tallied 32 excellent sets for the Lady Bulldogs.
NU pulled away early in the third set, building a 21-14 lead that dictated the outcome of the match.
The Lady Bulldogs went behind, 17-19, in the second set after letting UP string five unanswered points. NU tied it at 21 before Tots Carlos surrendered the lead to the Lady Bulldogs, 22-21, on an attack error.
Santiago put NU at set point, 24-22, before Isa Molde saved a set point on a kill but Marist Layug committed a service error as the Lady Bulldogs took a 2-0 match lead.
UP also gave NU a scare late in the first as the Lady Maroons saved three set points before the Lady Bulldogs put the set away after a net touch violation on the Diliman-based squad.
The Lady Maroons slid to 2-5 slate with all of their losses coming off straight sets tied with University of Sto. Tomas.
Carlos finished with 15 points while Isa Molde had 11 markers for UP, which gave away 24 points off errors.
