Three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila claimed its seventh straight victory.
Ateneo de Manila University head coach Oliver Almadro felt that his wards lost their intensity in the second set allowing De La Sale University to steal the frame.
He needed to remind them that Green Spikers won’t give them the win that easily.
The three-time defending champion responded with the same fire that brought them success in the opening round as the Blue Eagles ripped apart DLSU, 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 25-17, Wednesday in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
“We started slow in the second set. Kasi first set, we're doing good then dumikit ang La Salle. Then they brought the momentum to the second set,” said Almadro. “So we started slow, we started doubtful nung second set.” “Towards the end naman, nakukuha nila 'yung momentum, but it's too late. So, what I said to my players, in the third set we just have to put the intensity up. And hindi pupwedeng mag-let up. Importante aggressive and intense all the way,” he added.
Ateneo grabbed its seventh straight win in eight games for a hold of the solo lead with four-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo leading the way with 22 points including 19 off attacks.
Espejo added 20 excellent receptions and nine digs for the Katipunan-based squad. Karl Baysa scored 10 while Season 79 Rookie of Year Chumason Njigha had nine markers for Ateneo.
The Green Spikers fell to 3-5 slate in a three-way tie with University of the Philippines and University of Sto. Tomas.
Arjay Onia finished with 15 points and Raymark Woo got 11 markers for DLSU. Cris Dumago had 10 points for the Green Spikers.
