Four straight wins for the defending champions!
Reigning MVP Jarvey Gayoso came up big once again as he scored late to power defending champions Ateneo de Manila past National University, 1-0, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium for their fourth straight win in UAAP Season 80 Men's Football action.
After being contained by National U for most of the match, Gayoso came up with the difference-maker in the 78th minute, recieving a long pass from Koko Gaudiel and volleying the ball up and over NU keeper Chris Perocho for the 1-0 lead.
With a little over ten minutes left in regulation, the Bulldogs tried to push the action with hopes of finding an equalizer, but could not get anything to drop as they fall to the Blue Eagles for the second time this season.
After the match, Ateneo head coach Jaypee Merida had nothing but praise for NU, who gave them a tough match to open the second round.
"Ang ganda ng approach ng NU, talagang mag-seset sila ng magandang tempo sa Ateneo kasi from their last two games, nanalo sila. Ang ganda, unbelievable performance from NU, they played well, binigyan talaga nila kami ng problema, especially nung first half."
Merida also touched on his striker Gayoso's ability to score. Including this one, Gayoso has netted a league-leading eight goals this season.
"Si Jarvey, especially sa mga ganung situation talaga, yung scoring niya sa mga distance, mga 30 to 40 yards, especially kung mataas yung keeper, kaya niyang i-handle yung accuracy."
With the win, Ateneo moves into solo-first place with six wins and two losses for 18 points.
NU falls to three wins, a draw, and four losses for ten points
