The Far Eastern University Street Alliance captured its first-ever UAAP Streetdance Competition title.
The Far Eastern University Street Alliance faced lots of adversities including limited time of preparation before coming up with a routine that toppled the perennial favorites.
Lumbering at fifth place in the previous three editions of the competition, the Morayta-based dance group reinvented itself and came up with a gangster theme to steal the championship of the 80th UAAP Streetdance Competition Sunday at the MOA Arena.
FEU earned a total score of 85.75 points to capture its first-ever title and a hefty sum of P70,000.
“When we started the group last January, we just wanted to show something fresh na galing sa FEU,” said FEU coach Randell San Gregorio, who is also the school’s cheerdance team.
The win was a lot sweeter for the squad considering the challenge of forming a team from scratch just two months before the competition.
“Siyempre the target is to break into the top three, lagi naman yun,” said San Gregorio. “Pero dahil nga pressed for time kami and di kasi ito isang team lang and nagpa-audition kami, in-open namin sa buong FEU ang audition and mahirap i-jell together ang team. Sobrang laking bonus nito.”
FEU dethroned last year’s champions La Salle Dance Company-Street, which used modern dance music and hinged on an emoji theme, and former three-peat University of the Philippines Streetdance Club.
LSDC scored 79.50 to place first runnerup with a P40,000 while UP landed at third with a 78.60 points and a P30,000 cash prize.
Rounding up the rankings were University Sto. Tomas Prime (75.60), University of the East Street Warriors (72.20), Company of Ateneo Dancers (69), National University Underdawgz (67.50 and Adamson Cast (57.50).
Meanwhile, UST Galvanize became the first-ever juniors division champs with a total of 82.30 points.
FEU Street Alliance finished second (71.50) followed by UE Street Warriors (71.10), De La Salle-Zobel Dance Crew (67), NU Underdawgz (63.50), Adamson Cast (60) and UP Street Dance Club (55.70).
