UAAP 80 Men’s Football: Ateneo, DLSU split points in draw
Ateneo and DLSU battle to a scoreless draw to split points for the first time this season.

Defending champions Ateneo de Manila and collegiate rivals De La Salle University split points for the first time this season as they battled to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman football field in UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football action.

A tightly-contested affair for all of ninety minutes, both sides were aggressive and tried to push their own offensive sets.

While Ateneo managed to get off more chances, they couldn’t get anything to drop, thanks in part to DLSU’s defensive intensity.

After ninety minutes, the scoreline stood at 0-0 for the first draw on both sides’ records.

“It was a tough game talaga, both teams played well,” said Ateneo head coach Jaypee Merida after the match. “We had a lot of opportunities, especially with Jarvey, hindi lang namin na-convert. Ang problema lang is yung finishing. I’m happy na rin kasi we earned one point, yun lang, medyo sometimes nakaka-frustrate lang because of the opportunities na binigay sa amin.”

DLSU head coach Hans Smit was pleased with his boys’ performance, especially after managing to get a better result this time around, as compared to their 2-1 loss to the Blue Eagles in the first round.

“I’ll admit Ateneo is a much better team than ours, they have better players but my team held up with their intensity and defense. Ateneo had more dangerous attempts than we had, but we held up. That’s a good sign.”

“Like I said in the last game, I hope they keep their intensity, that’s all they need. If the intensity is there, it’s easier to work out whatever quirks we have.” Smit added.

Ateneo moves to six wins, one draw, and two losses for 19 points in the season, while DLSU moves to four wins, one draw and four losses for 13 points.
