UAAP 80 Men’s Football: UP dominates UST to remain unbeaten
UP dominated UST, 4-0, to remain unbeaten in UAAP Season 80 men's football.

University of the Philippines opened the second round with a strong statement as they beat down University of Santo Tomas, 4-0, Sunday morning at the FEU Diliman football field to remain unbeaten in the UAAP Season 80 men’s football tournament.

A 39th minute goal from Fidel Tacardon set the tone for the rest of the match, as the rookie connected on his second goal of the season for the Maroons for the 1-0 advantage.

Just before halftime, third-year man JB Borlongan doubled the UP lead and netted his team-high seventh goal of the season.

The second half didn’t get any better for the Growling Tigers, who couldn’t get any stops as Tacardon had his hand at yet another goal, this time finding Karl Bugayong for the 3-0 lead just two minutes in.

In the 58th minute, UST gave up a foul on UP striker King Miyagi inside the box, leading to a penalty kick, which was easily converted by Christian Lapas for the commanding 4-0 advantage and ultimately the victory.

“This has to be our best game of the season,” said a satisfied UP head coach Anto Gonzales after the match. “Execution-wise, it was on top of the priority, which we weren’t able to achieve in our game against UST last week, so that was the key today, execution, and workrate of the midfielders.”

UP’s 4-0 win over UST was a far cry from their 1-1 draw in the first round, and Gonzales noted that his boys did a good job of bouncing back and doing a better job the next time around.

“They took their lessons from that game very well. Right after that game, the response during the training sessions were very positive, they realized that they have to step up in terms of executing the plans.”

With the win, UP improves to six wins and two draws in eight games for 20 points.

UST meanwhile absorbs just their second loss of the season and drops to four wins, two draws, and two losses for 14 points.
