The UST Tigresses surprised seven-time Adamson Lady Falcons by getting the first game, 4-3, in of the best-of-three UAAP Season 80 Softball Finals at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium Tuesday morning.
Ace pitcher Ann Antolihao delivered seven strikeouts for the three-time finalists, scattering them in the most crucial moments of the bottom innings.
Bianca Hernandez delivered the win for UST in the top of the third inning, as she drilled a two-RBI-single, sending skipper CJ Roa and catcher Tin Palma home, effectively sealing the game for the Tigresses.
Jessie Belaño's run tied the game for the girls from España at 2-all following an RBI-double by Roa in the prior possession.
UST drew first blood in the game, as first hitter Hannah Dela Torre went home following a bunt RBI single by Palma in the top of the first.
Adamson then woke up in the bottom of the second as Jeanette Rusia drilled the ball enough to fly over the fence for a home run, while Flor Pabiania also scored a home run after Antolihao and Roa failed to connect.
"Pinaka-importante 'yung Game 1. 'Pag nakakuha ka ng ng Game 1, madali na 'yung Game 2 and 3," UST coach Sandy Barredo said.
The former UST Golden Sox player also hoped that his team will clinch the title on Friday, and end the seven-year streak of the Lady Falcons.
"Pero 'di natin pipilitin umabot ng Game 3, tatapusin na natin, pipilitin natin matapos ng Friday, Game 2. That's it. Isi-sweep natin 'to elimination round, babawi tayo."
UST will try to clinch their first title since February 2010 as Game 2 of the Finals will be on Friday, Mar. 16, 9 a.m., at the same venue.
