Kim Malabunga led National University's solid net defense to take down University of Sto. Tomas and move closer to clinching a semis berth.
National University frustrated a skidding University Sto. Tomas with its vaunted net defense to score an easy 25-21, 25-16, 25-22 win Wednesday to secure at least a playoff for a Final Four berth in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Kim Malabunga anchored the Bulldogs’ solid game at the net, scoring six kill blocks as NU captured its seventh straight win for share of the lead at 8-1 win-loss record tied with archrival three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University.
Bryan Bagunas powered the Bulldogs with 19 points off 15 attacks and four kill blocks. Malabunga had 14 markers while skipper Francis Saura added 10 points for NU, which had 14 kill blocks.
“Masaya ako sa naging performance ng team ko ngayon and maganda ang naging blocking namin. Ang dami naming nakuhang puntos sa block. Sobrang importante rin na maganda yung service receive namin,” said NU Bulldogs coach Dante Alinsunurin.
The Bulldogs only needed 76 minutes to dispose the Tigers, who dropped their fifth straight defeat and pushed on the brink of missing the Final Four cut.
UST slid to 3-6 slate tied with Adamson University.
Joshua Umandal got 15 points while Tyrone Carodan and Jayvee Sumagaysay combined for 15 markers for the Espana-based squad.
