JB Borlongan was one of three players to score as UP blanked UE, 3-0.
Three players found their scoring touch to help lead University of the Philippines past University of the East, 3-0, in UAAP Season 80 men's football action, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Skipper Ian Clarino was the first to strike for the Fighting Maroons, capitalizing off an error from UE keeper Frank Rieza and a scramble near the Red Warriors goal to tip the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Third-year striker King Miyagi also got in on the scoring after faking Rieza out and off his line for an easy tap and a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
UP's other offensive weapon this season, JB Borlongan essentially put the game on ice in the 62nd minute, speeding past his defender and then firing and connecting on an attempt from just inside the box.
The Red Warriors had a number of opportunities to score as well, but their finishing troubles played a factor once again.
While they came away with the win, UP head coach Anto Gonzales commented on his team's performance in the second half, which saw UE get more aggressive and put up better chances at goal.
"We can't be satisfied with how we played in the second half. We changed players, but the game-changers have to have a high level of play, they should be able to read the game very well because they're coming off the bench."
With the win, UP improves to seven wins and two draws for 23 points and solo first place. The Fighting Maroons inch closer to clinching a playoff berth, and a win over NU in their next match could seal the deal.
UE on the other hand falls to three wins, one draw, and five losses for ten points.
