Far Eastern University completed an elimination round sweep of three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University.
Far Eastern University clawed its way back from a two-point deficit in the fifth set before surviving a furious rally by three-time defending champion Ateneo De Manila University, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 16-14, Saturday in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tamaraws snapped the Blue Eagles’ eight-game winning streak and spoiled four-time Marck Espejo’s career-best 39 points to improve to 7-2 win-loss record.
Jude Garcia and Redijohn Paler finished with 17 points each while JP Bugaoan and Richard Solis, who scored the game-clinching cross court hit, posted 15 and 13 markers, respectively, for the Morayta-based squad.
Up, 6-3, to open the fifth frame, FEU saw its lead evaporate and trailed Ateneo, 11-9, after Chumason Njigha scored on a quick attack. The Tams countered with a scoring barrage to move at match point, 14-11, on a Paler kill.
FEU committed three straight errors that tied the deciding frame at 14. Raymond Bautista made his relief stint count with a down the line hit before Paler finished the two-hour, 25-minute match with a booming hit to complete the Tams’ elims sweep of Ateneo.
Espejo scored all but one of his points off attacks and had 22 excellent receptions and 10 digs in a lost cause for the Blue Eagles, which fell to 8-2 slate.
Skipper Karl Baysa got 11 markers while Ron Medalla and Njigha finished with eight points each for Ateneo.
