Number lang naman 'yan -- Espejo on 39-point explosion
’Yan number lang naman ‘yan, ang nagma-matter talaga ay ‘yung panalo -- Four-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo

Four-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo scored 39 points Saturday but would rather focus on Ateneo de Manila University’s next game than enjoy his career performance.

After all, all of the graduating hitter’s effort went down the drain when the three-time defending champion Blue Eagles yielded to Far Eastern University, 27-25, 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 14-16, in their elimination round rematch in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament.

The fifth year star had 38 attack points off 80 attempts.

Good game pa rin kasi fifth set tapos 16-14 pa. Sa dulo lang talaga kami nagkatalo.”

The King Eagle was also active on defense with 22 excellent receptions and 10 digs in an exhausting outing in the two-hour, 25-minute duel.

Espejo’s work wasn’t enough to save Ateneo’s eight-game winning streak to come to a screeching halt to drop to solo second spot with an 8-2 mark.

FEU completed an elimination sweep of the Katipunan-based squad.

Espejo, who had 35 points in a five-set win against De La Salle University in Season 78, saw the loss as nothing but a minor hiccup, a tough lesson that the Blue Eagles needed to learn from.

Ateneo will face University of the Philippines next week in the Blue Eagles’ second chance to punch a semifinals ticket.
