Ateneo de Manila University crossed out two of the three teams in their revenge list.
Far Eastern University, done in straight sets.
National University, pounded to submission in just three frames.
Ateneo de Manila University exacted revenge on the two teams that handed them consecutive losses to start their campaign in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
It took the Lady Eagles only 76 minutes to tame the Lady Bulldogs, 25-22, 25-16, 25-17, Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
“It’s a really huge boost in our confidence knowing that the teams that defeated us we can get back at them ‘di ba?” said Bea De Leon.
Ateneo joined their victims in a three-way tie at second to fourth spots with a 6-3 win-loss slate.
“Sobrang laking bawi noon not only on the standings but for our confidence knowing that we can do it,” added De Leon, who scored nine markers with five coming off kill blocks. “If you train hard enough and you work hard enough you can really get back up.”
With Ponggay Gaston playing comfortable with her new role as libero, the Lady Eagles improved on their reception and floor defense, which were suspect during Ateneo’s sorry 19-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-12, 7-15 loss to the Lady Bulldogs in the Katipunan-based squad’s worst start in 11 years.
The defeat came a few days after the Lady Tams handed Ateneo a five-set season-opening loss.
“Our receive (was difference). I think it was really, really the receive that got us organized, it’s the first line eh,” said De Leon, who added that their tight defense at the net that resulted in 11 kill blocks also played a key role. “Like especially this game nga, we really worked on our blockings, it’s the first line of defense.”
Skipper Maddie Madayag credited the team’s drive to improve and learn from their mistakes in the first round.
“It was definitely a big comeback. As you can see naman ang ganda ng laro naming. We had receive, we had blocking, we had defense and service also spiking,” said Madayag, who had 13 points including six of Ateneo’s 14 service aces.
“Yeah, so ang laking improvement from last round naman you can see naman. I think everybody adjusted well kasi parang maganda naman ang pinapakita, kahit na may mali bumabawi naman.”
Now the only remaining team on the Lady Eagles’ revenge list is archrival two-time defending champion De La Salle University.
But Ateneo will have to wait a little longer for the marquee match set on April 15 at the MOA Arena.
