Ateneo de Manila University moved up to a share of the second spot after defeating first round tormentor National University.
Ateneo de Manila University got its cold-blooded revenge win over National University, 25-22, 25-16, 25-17, Saturday to move up to a share of the second spot in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles avenged their five-set loss the Lady Bulldogs in the opening round.
The Katipunan-based squad joined their victim and Far Eastern University at second to fourth spots with 6-3 win-loss slates. Ateneo claimed its first win against NU since Season 78 and handed the Lady Bulldogs their second consecutive loss.
Maddie Madayag punished NU from the service line with six aces in her 13-point outing while Jules Samonte and Jho Maraguinot had 11 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Lady Eagles. Kat Tolentino had eight points, half coming off service winners, for Ateneo.
Aside from landing 14 aces, the Lady Eagles also clogged the net to frustrate the hitters of NU especially 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago. Bea De Leon anchored Ateneo's superb net defense with five kill blocks in her nine-point performance while Samonte had four in the Lady Eagles' 11 kill blocks.
"Those blocks were really crucial because spiking is one of their biggest advantage with Jaja and Risa (Sato)," said De Leon.
Santiago scored 16 points as the only Lady Bulldog in double figures while Roselyn Doria and Audrey Paran combined for 10 markers. Sato and Jorelle Singh were limited to only three points each for NU.
The Lady Bulldogs, who closed the first round with a 6-1 card, has yet to win a set in the crucial half of the eliminations.
