University of Sto. Tomas ended a five-game losing slump.
Sisi Rondina got all the help she can get from her teammates as University of Sto. Tomas arrested a five-game losing slump at the expense of first round tormentor University of the Philippines, 19-25, 30-28, 25-20, 25-16, Saturday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tigresses bared their teeth as they shook off a sluggish start to tie their victim with 3-7 win-loss record and kept UST’s flickering Final Four hopes alive.
Rondina blasted 25 points with all but one coming off attacks while adding 13 excellent receptions and excellent digs for the Espana-based squad, which avenged its four-set loss to the Lady Maroons in the opening round.
Going solo on offense in their losing skid, Rondina this time got Fil-Italian rookie Milena Alessandrini to help her out as the 6-foot-1 open hitter carved out 20 markers. Alessandrini, who played her third game since coming back from a shoulder injury, made her presence felt with 14 kills and imposed her will at the net with six kill blocks for UST.
After surrendering the opening set, UST turned the tables around with a pivotal win in the second frame.
The Tigresses were able to move at set point, 24-23, but the Diliman-based squad countered to force a deuce. UST saved four set points before taking the frame off UP's back-to-back attack errors committed by Tots Carlos and Isa Molde.
With momentum on their side the Tigresses cruised in the next two frames to annex the victory that kept them in the Final Four berth contest.
"Nagising na kami sa napakasamang bangungot," said UST coach Kungfu Reyes.
“Ito ang matagal na naming inaayos, individually and as a group. Malaking bagay itong panalo na ‘to,” he added. “Masyado na kaming nabugbog pinilit naming tumayo. Ito nakatayo na kami. Ang importante ngayon ay paano kami babalik kasi ang 5-game losing streak napaka-uncharacteristic para sa amin.”
Carlos registered 24 markers off 21 kills, two aces and a kill block while Molde had 18 points for the Lady Maroons.
