University of Sto. Tomas needed a wakeup call.

Tigresses ace scorer Sisi Rondina, the heart and soul of the team, gathered her teammates before UST marched into battle against first round tormentor University of the Philippines.

“Before the game kinausap ko talaga ang teammates ko, ako talaga ang nag-utos na tawagin sila,” said the fourth year hitter.

It was what the Espana-based squad needed – a plea for help from the same player that carried them throughout their 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament campaign.

The Tigresses responded with a morale-boosting 19-25, 30-28, 25-20, 25-16, victory that snapped UST’s five-game losing slump and kept its Final Four hopes alive at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

“Kaya sabi ko nga ito ‘yung lugar muna namin, trabaho muna namin,” Rondina said. “So ayun doon kami nagkakaintindihan kaya ‘yun ang kinalabasan ng team.”

Rondina played her usual game, scoring 25 points highlighted by 24 attacks.

The Cebuana hotshot provided 13 excellent receptions and 13 digs in an all-around performance for the Tigresses.

But unlike in their past games, Rondina had plenty of help.

Fil-Italian rookie Milena Alessandrini to help her out as the 6-foot-1 open hitter carved out 20 markers. Alessandrini, who played her third game since coming back from a shoulder injury, made her presence felt with 14 kills and imposed her will at the net with six kill blocks for UST.

Tin Francisco, Caitlyn Viray and seldom-used Mildred Dizon combined for 17 markers to provide extra offense.

Rondina hopes that the victory will be a start of something big for the Tigresses.
