UAAP Season 80 Menís Football: Ateneo exacts revenge on UST
Jarvey Gayoso (11) and Koko Gaudiel (10) scored a goal each to lead Ateneo past UST in UAAP Season 80 men's football action

Defending champions Ateneo de Manila managed to gain a measure of revenge against University of Santo Tomas with a 2-0 victory in the UAAP Season 80 men’s football tournament, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

When Ateneo and UST first shared the pitch in the first round, the Growling Tigers came away victorious, 1-0, thanks to a late goal from striker Steven Anotado.

This time around, with Anotado on the second of a two-match suspension due to cards, it was Ateneo’s star striker Jarvey Gayoso who drew first blood early, scoring in the 13th minute with a shot from the left side.

Staring at just a single goal deficit, UST turned up the pressure in the second half, pushing their offensive sets, which in turn led to a handful of attempts on goal.

Unfortunately for the Espanya-based squad, Ateneo keeper AJ Arcilla got his hands on a lot of UST’s attempts to deny any chances of an equalizer.

In the 86th minute, substitute Koko Gaudiel put the game on ice and doubling the Ateneo lead with a goal coming off a defensive miscue on UST’s end.

“Personally, I wanted to up my game from the last time we went against UST, and collectively, we were able to pick ourselves up from that.” Gayoso said following the win.

The Blue Eagles played without co-captain Jayrah Rocha, who was serving a suspension due to cards, and Gayoso praised his teammates for being able to step up, even with one of their key rotation players on the pitch.

“It was nice to see the entire team, despite the loss of one of our captains, Jayrah, we were able to step up and we were still able to prove ourselves, not only to the team but also to the fans and to all the alumni that we have more to give, that we can beat UST, that we’re still determined to win and we’re still fighting for that championship.”

With the win, Ateneo improves to eight wins, one draw, and two losses for 25 points and solo second place. Just one back from league-leading UP who have already clinched a semifinals spot, the defending champions are also inching closer to securing a final four berth.

UST, still at third place as of press time, falls to four wins, three draws, and three losses for 15 points.
