UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football: UP strikes late to sink NU, clinches playoff berth

University of the Philippines scored twice late in the second half to beat National University and remain unbeaten in UAAP Season 80 Men's Football.
Back-to-back goals late in the second half gave unbeaten University of the Philippines the separation they needed to defeat National University, 2-0, in the second round of UAAP Season 80 men’s football action, Sunday morning at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Looking to improve their standing as the post season draws nearer, National U clamped on the defenses to keep UP scoreless early.
The Maroons found an opportunity to score late in the first half however, after the Bulldogs gave up a foul inside the penalty box.
NU keeper Chris Perocho came up with a defensive gem however, denying the Maroons’ penalty attempt to keep the scorelines blank heading into halftime.
With 45 minutes left to come up with a result, UP turned the pressure up on the offensive side.
With less than five minutes left to go in regulation, the Diliman-based side finally broke the deadlock, as third-year man JB Borlongan continued his high-scoring season, hitting in the 86th minute to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead.
Just a minute later, striker King Miyagi, who’s also been an offensive threat for UP, joined the scoring party to double the Maroons’ lead late.
UP keeper Harel Dayan came up with a defensive gem of his own late in the match, denying an NU attempt and helping the Maroons hold on to the 2-0 win.
With the win, UP improves to eight wins and two draws in ten matches for 26 points and solo first place. More importantly, the Maroons have clinched a final four birth for the eighth-straight season.
NU on the other hand, drops to four wins, one draw, and five losses for 13 points.
