Adamson University kept its Final Four bids alive with a five-set win over University of the East.
Adamson University flirted with disaster before eking out a hard-earned 19-25, 25-11, 16-25, 25-16, 15-12, win over first round tormentors University of the East to end a two-game slump Sunday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
One hitter less after rookie Chiara Permentilla skipped the rematch due to a left ankle sprain she suffered during their training, the Lady Falcons banked on veterans Jema Galanza and Mylene Paat in the crucial stretch of the fifth frame to improve to 4-5 win-loss record.
Galanza scored 22 points off 18 attacks, three aces and a kill block while Paat scored all but one of her 18 markers on attacks including the match-clinching kill to close the two-hour, nine-minute match. Eli Soyud had 11 points while Joy Dacoron got 10 markers for the Lady Falcons.
Adamson snapped the Lady Warriors’ two-game winning run and avenged its five-set loss to UE at the close of the first round.
“Well, we've battled a lot of adversity,” said Adamson coach Air Padda. “Chiara sprained her angle pretty bad this week, that's why she wasn't in the line-up. Eli's home is not in the open, she would rather play as an opposite.”
“But we just told them, I don't know. When things are falling apart, maybe it's for us, so that we can fall into place. And we knew today coming into this game that UE has the confidence. I'm pretty sure that they expected to beat us. Um, I just told them, it's not gonna be easy,” she added.
The Lady Falcons broke a 4-4 deadlock early in the fifth with a sizzling rally for a 9-5 gap. Adamson went ahead, 12-8, before the Lady Warriors fought back breathe down the Lady Falcons' necks, 12-11, capped by Mary Anne Mendrez's back-to-back hits.
Adamson got a lucky break on the next play when Mendrez mistimed an attack attempt. On that play, the Lady Falcons thought they already scored a point when Le-Ann Perez smashed an attack but the officials allowed the play to continue after UE made a pancake save. They were already celebrating before Mendrez's attack error off an overset by Lai Bendong.
Galanza pushed Adamson at match point, UE saved a point on a Lady Falcons' net touch error before Paat sealed the win with a kill.
Mendrez posted 17 points off 15 kills, Shaya Adorador got 12 while Judith Abil had 10 for UE, which dropped to 2-7 slate.
