University of Sto. Tomas halted a five-game slide with a four-set victory over University of the East.
University of Sto. Tomas arrested a five-game losing skid but needed to rally from a set down to escape an upset against University of the East, 22-25, 27-25, 25-8, 25-9, Sunday in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tigers needed a wakeup call from head coach Odjie Mamon after a disastrous first set and a close-shaved second frame before responding with a mightily in the last two frames to improve to 4-6 win-loss record.
Arnold Bautista scored all but one of his 15 points, Joshua Umandal had 14 while Jayvee Sumagaysay and Manuel Medina chipped in 12 and 10, respectively, for UST.
The also-ran Red Warriors remained winless in nine games.
Skipper Geric Ortega was the only UE player in double figures with 12 points while Alven Aljas and Clifford Inoferio had nine and eight markers, respectively.
