Ateneo de Manila University captured its third straight win to move a step closer to clinching a Final Four berth.
Ateneo de Manila found University of the East a tough customer before plucking its third straight victory to move a step closer to clinching a Final Four spot in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Eagles repelled the pesky Lady Warriors, 25-14, 18-25, 25-13, 25-18, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan to move up to second spot with 7-3 win-loss record.
Kat Tolentino, skipper Maddie Madayag and Jho Maraguinot led the way for the Katipunan-based squad, who dropped a set for the first time in the second round.
Tolentino blasted 16 spikes, had five kill blocks and an ace for 22 points to lead the Lady Eagles while Jho Maraguinot got 16 markers off 14 attacks, an ace and a kill block as well as a 18 digs for an all-around performance. Madayag had 13 points while Jules Samonte got 11 markers for Ateneo, which can clinch at least a playoff for a semis spot with a win against Adamson University on Sunday.
Deanna Wong had 50 excellent sets for Ateneo.
The Lady Eagles got into trouble in the second set, falling to an early 8-13 deficit. Ateneo closed the gap 16-17 only to allow UE to steal the frame with a closing 8-2 scoring blitz.
The Lady Warriors kep the game close to start the last two sets but the Lady Eagles were ready to push them back each frame.
“Medyo no one was talking kasi inside the court and then ayun tuloy, it led to reception errors,” said Madayag.
UE absorbed its second straight defeat for a 2-8 card.
Shaya Adorador finished with 21 points anchored on 19 attacks while Mary Ann Mendrez and Judith Abil got 10 and seven markers, respectively, for the Lady Warriors. Kath Arado had 30 digs and 16 excellent receptions for UE.
