Ateneo secures at least a semis seat playoff in comeback win
Ateneo de Manila University went through the wringer before pulling off a five-set come-from-behind win against Adamson University.

Ateneo de Manila University came back from a seven-point deficit in the fourth set to extend the match before pouring it all out in the deciding frame to pull off a come-from-behind 24-26, 25-19, 21-25, 26-24, 15-12 win over Adamson University Sunday in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.

The Lady Eagles needed a great comeback in the fourth frame before fending off the Lady Falcons’ furious rally in the fifth set to survive a tough battle and secure at least a playoff for Final Four berth. Ateneo won its fourth straight match for an 8-3 win-loss record at solo second spot.

“We never gave up lang, that’s the thing, it really all boils down to character and what coach Tai always says, heartstrong talaga ‘yung nakapunta sa isip namin eh,” said setter Deanna Wong, who tallied a career-high 63 excellent sets and six points.

“We trusted our teammates lang and we encouraged each other back. We said na no matter what happens just play our best and everything else will follow,” she added.

Jho Maraguinot 23 points off 20 attacks, two aces and a kill block while Kat Tolentino dropped 17 markers for the Lady Eagles. Jules Samont had 12 points while Bea De Leon posted 11 markers for Ateneo, which has been dominating Adamson for half a decade.

The Katipunan-based squad built an 11-6 lead in the deciding frame only to see Adamson tie it at 11 after Jho Maraguinot sent her attack straight to the net. Bea De Leon put the Lady Eagles back on top before Mylene Paat committed a net touch error that gave Ateneo a 13-11 lead.

Jema Galanza saved a point for the Lady Falcons but Maraguinot answered with a hammer before the Lady Eagles sealed the win with Bea De Leon's solid kill block on Paat.

Down, 15-22, in the fourth frame Ateneo unearthed their patented heartstrong mantra and great composure to rise above adversity.

The Lady Eagles mounted a blistering 8-1 rally tie it at 23 before Galanza pushed Adamson at match point with a booming kill. Galanza could’ve won the game but was called for a crossing violation and the Lady Falcons eventually collapsed with a four touches error committed by Le-Anne Perez before Ateneo scored on a kill block against Galanza.

Adamson fell to 5-6 slate.

Galanza had 23 points, Paat tallied 17 while Eli Soyud finished with 11 markers for the Lady Falcons. Joy Dacoron got 10 points while setter Fhem Emnas dished out 39 excellent sets and eight markers for Adamson.
