Madz Gampong and Bryan Bagunas connived in NU's mighty rebound
National University was not having another sorry loss in the 80th Season of the UAAP Men’s Volleyball Tournament.
Madz Gampong made sure of that, firing 21 markers to lead four other teammates in double-digits in the Bulldogs’ four-set triumph over the University of the Philippines, 25-12, 19-25, 25-15, and 25-20 on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Gampong took 15 of his output from attacks while Bryan Bagunas also hammered down 14 spikes for a total of 19 markers. Francis Saura then added 13 points and Kim Malabunga and James Natividad each chipped in 10 of their own.
NU was in charge and scored 13-point win in the first set before lifting their foot off the pedal and allowing the Fighting Maroons to steal the second set.
Gampong and Bagunas then regrouped their troops and they remained in the driver’s seat the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs’ defense was stout as always as they dominated their opponents in blocks, 14-5.
They weren’t so bad at the service line either and collected 10 aces.
The all-out domination was a much welcome development for head coach Dante aAlinsunurin who saw his wards drop a straight set loss to Adamson University a week ago.
The bounce back win improves NU’s record to 10-2 – ahead of both 9-2 Ateneo de Manila University and Far Easter University and good for solo first.
In the day’s other game, the Soaring Falcons pecked De La Salle University, 25-22, 16-25, 25-15, and 29-27 to hike their record to 6-6.
Mark Alvarez showed the way with 15 points, including six blocks. With that, they remain alive and kicking for a playoff berth.
Their respective losses dropped the Green Spikers to 4-8 and State U to 3-9.
