The University of the Philippines remains in the running in the 80th Season of the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

Tots Carlos and Isa Molde both came up big in the Lady Maroons’ surprising straight sets takedown of reeling National University, 25-18, 25-22, and 25-20 on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Center.

Needing a big win to stay alive, they leaned on Carlos and Molde who did nothing but deliver the goods with 18 and 19 points, respectively. “Knowing NU, sobrang lakas ng team nila, lalo na si Jaja, hindi yun aayaw. Ang ginawa lang namin, in-apply namin yung ginawa namin sa training,” team captain Carlos said.

State U’s determination was evident in the second set as they used total team effort in a 14-5 run that turned a five-point deficit into a 21-19 advantage. The last three points there came courtesy of Carlos – two from aces and one from a spike.

The Lady Bulldogs battled back to 21-22 before Ayel Estranero’s well-placed hits bookended a Jaja Santiago error to seize the set for UP.

The momentum would not leave their side as it was Molde’s time to shine in the third set.

Now at 4-8, the Lady Maroons are now tied with University of Sto. Tomas for the sixth and seventh spots – just behind 5-6 Adamson University. “We’re a team in progress, we’re still building. We want to finish the season strong so maybe that’s why I’m here,” head coach Godfrey Okumu said.

Their three-set romp also kept the Lady Bulldogs winless in the second round.

Jaja Santiago was the lone bright spot for them with 19 points. Their second-best scorer was setter Jasmine Nabor who had five markers to her name.

At one point leading the league by far, NU’s record now stands at 6-6.
