UAAP 80 Men’s Football: Tacardon hat trick lifts UP past AdU
Rookie Fidel Tacardon had himself a game, getting a hat trick in just the first half.

League-leading University of the Philippines returned to action with another dominant performance, taking down still-winless Adamson University, 5-1, in UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football action, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Rookie Fidel Tacardon had himself quite the afternoon, breaking out with a hat trick to help the Fighting Maroons to their tenth win in Season 80.

Tacardon got things going early for UP, finishing off a cross from JB Borlongan just three minutes into the match.

Seven minutes later, Tacardon easily found his mark again, scoring on an empty goal after a Christian Lapas attempt displaced Adamson keeper Carl Viray.

In the 32nd minute, King Miyagi tripled the Fighting Maroons lead after finishing a John Abraham cross near the goal.

Just before halftime, Tacardon completed the hat trick after shaking off three Adamson defenders and finishing inside the box to give UP a comfortable 4-0 lead just before the midgame break.

With less than ten minutes left, Karl Bugayong joined the scoring party, making it a 5-0 lead for UP after converting off another pass from Lapas inside the box.

The Soaring Falcons managed to avoid getting shut out however, with Jusuel Pilarca pulling one back in the 89th minute.

"In the first half, I thought we did well, for a week we tried to add something to our attack, which we tried to do in the first half." said UP head coach Anto Gonzales. "In the second half, I thought we became lazy, I don't know, lazy, or we had a few players who didn't really put in the effort needed. We slacked off. We can't be conceding goals when we're dominating a game."

"Babalik ulit kami sa weakness namin na yung mental stability, mental state, that's what we've been addressing in the past couple of weeks, because when they want to be the best, they can be the best, but once they relax, they stop thinking, they switch off, it's not a good sight to see."

With the win, UP strengthens their hold on the top seed with ten wins and two draws for 32 points, four ahead of defending champions and second-seeded Ateneo de Manila.

Adamson on the other hand, remains at the bottom of the standings with twelve losses in twelve matches.
