University of Sto. Tomas takes on Ateneo de Manila University in the Tigers' drive for the last Final Four spot.
University of Sto. Tomas battles semis-bound three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University in a crucial match in the Tigers' race for the last Final Four berth in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena on Saturday.
Sporting a 5-6 win-loss record, the Espana-based squad is a game behind no. 4 team Adamson University (6-6) with only one semis spot remaining after Ateneo, National University and Far Eastern University occupied the first three slots.
But the Tigers must bring their A-game against the Blue Eagles in their scheduled 8:00 a.m. duel that will air live on LIGA on SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable Channel 183 and via livestream to keep their semis hopes alive.
UST is coming off back-to-back victories including a four-set 25-22, 25-20, 14-25, 25-21, win over De La Salle University before the Holy Week break.
The Blue Eagles, on the other hand, are also coming off a four-set win over also-ran University of the Philippines, 24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 31-29, last March 24 and are tied with FEU at second to third spots with 9-2 slates.
A win by Ateneo will push the Blue Eagles closer to clinching a semis twice-to-beat advantage.
Meanwhile, DLSU and UP will duke it out at 10:00 a.m.
The Green Spikers still have an outside chance of making it to the semis if they sweep all their remaining games and hope that both Adamson and UST won’t notch a seventh win to force a playoff.
With a 3-9 slate, the Fighting Maroons are already out of the semis picture.
