UST and DLSU meet in a match with playoff implications
Matches on Sunday, April 8 (FEU Diliman)
8:00 AM - NU vs. FEU (Men’s)
1:30 PM - Adamson vs. UE (Men’s)
3:30 PM - UST vs. DLSU
Contenders University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle look to inch closer to a semifinals berth when they cross paths once again in the UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football tournament, Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman football field.
With two of the four available semifinals spots already clinched, the race gets tighter for the remaining teams in contention, and third-seeded University of Santo Tomas hope to be able to inch even closer to securing a third-consecutive Final Four appearance.
Standing in their way however, will be fourth-seeded De La Salle, who are in no position to relax, as they’re only three points ahead of National University and University of the East. A collapse from the Taft-based side will leave the door open for NU or UE to take over the fourth seed.
A win for the Green Archers however will put them at 19 points, enough to overtake UST for the third spot.
In their first round encounter, UST bested DLSU, 2-0, behind goals from Steven Anotado and Dexter Benecio.
UST and DLSU kick off at 3:30 PM.
In the early morning match, NU also tries to keep their playoff hopes alive when they take on Far Eastern University.
Sitting at 13 points with three matches left, the Bulldogs are still very much in the hunt for their first Final Four appearance. Coach Mari Aberasturi and his boys however, will need to avoid dropping points, and hope for a Taft meltdown, if they want to finally break into the post-season.
Currently at the seventh-seed, Season 79 runners-up FEU have struggled through a season full of injuries and heartbreak. And while it’ll be a stretch with four games remaining, the Tamaraws still have a chance to sneak into the playoffs, but they’ll have to be perfect from here on out.
In their first round meeting, NU bested FEU, 2-0, behind conversions from Sean Epili and Zyrus Capellan.
NU and FEU kick off at 8:00 AM.
In the early afternoon contest, UE also tries to keep their playoff chances alive when they take on last-place Adamson University.
Sitting at 13 points with three matches to go, UE will need win out the rest of their schedule and hope for breaks in the form of losses from NU and DLSU to make the Final Four.
For the winless and draw-less Soaring Falcons on the other hand, all they can do now is try to end their season strong and prevent a scoreless season.
In their first round matchup, UE defeated Adamson, 2-0, thanks to conversions from Mark Lerion and Mar Diano.
UE and Adamson kick off at 1:30 PM.
