By staying in FEU, RJ Abarrientos is fulfilling a promise
RJ Abarrientos is dedicating all of his time in green and gold to his late lolo Johnny Sr.

The next generation of Abarrientos will be suiting up soon for Far Eastern University.

Of course, RJ Abarrientos had already played, and even won a championship in, FEU-Diliman in the UAAP Juniors.

But 2018 will be the first time we will be seeing a Tamaraw Abarrientos since the glory days of Johnny Abarrientos in the early ‘90s.

Even now, RJ is already well aware of the expectations that comes with the name on the back of his jersey. “Yun po talaga yung pinasok ko rito – para sundan yung yapak niya,” he said in an earlier interview.

That is exactly why the now 17-year-old is already hard at work to be able to live up to his family name. “Nag-start na po yung training namin sa Seniors and lahat po talaga dun, pinakikinggan ko kasi bagong experience lahat,” he shared.

Make no mistake about it, the next generation of Abarrientos is nothing but determined to not let his family down.

Not just tito Johnny Jr. and his mother, but also lolo Johnny Sr. “Siyempre po, matagal ko nang napapanood si tito tapos naiisip ko, kung si tito, nagawa yun, dapat kaya ko rin,” he shared.

He then continued, “Kaya yun po ang promise ko kay lolo – na gagawin ko yung ginawa ni tito.”

Johnny Sr. is no longer around to see his apo follow in tito Johnny Jr.’s footsteps, but RJ still promises that he will give his all to make his lolo proud. As he put it, “Nangako ako na gagawin ko lahat nang makakaya ko kasi yun ang pangarap ni lolo sa akin ever since bata ako.”

Good thing for the 5-foot-11 guard then that “The Flying A” is still here to guide him all the way. “Nung huli po naming usap, sabi ni tito, kung ano man daw yung na-achieve at maa-achieve ko, dapat maging humble lang ako,” the former said.

He then continued, “Dun daw kasi siya nag-umpisa kaya nakami mga pangarap niya sa buhay. Sana, ganun din po magawa ko.”

The next generation of Abarrientos will be suiting up soon for FEU – and without a doubt, Johnny Sr. will be looking down on Johnny Jr. and RJ with a smile.
