Coach Joe Silva has nothing but good words for the man who takes over for him in Ateneo HS
Joe Silva will be moving on from Ateneo de Manila High School.
However, he will not leaving the Eagles’ nest.
The two-time UAAP Juniors champion coach will be staying on the staff of Ateneo Seniors head coach Tab Baldwin. “I’m still with the seniors team,” he said on Thursday, a day after his resignation was confirmed.
That means he will still be involved im the continued development of former wards like Thirdy Ravena, Nieto twins Matt and Mike, Gian Mamuyac, Jolo Mendoza, and SJ Belangel now for the Seniors squad.
As for the Blue Eaglets, Silva is only confident about the capabilities of new mentor Reggie Varilla. “He’s a very smart, detail-oriented, very analytical, and very cerebral. But values and discipline also come first for him,” he said.
He then continued, “Of course, Ateneo will be in good hands with him.”
Silva knows full well about Varilla’s coaching chops as the latter was a longtime fixture on the former’s staff. Both were part of the 2015 and 2018 championship teams.
For the school itself, Varilla’s appointment ensures a “smooth transition” from Silva. “We are confident that promoting coach Reggie as head coach guarantees the continuation of an already successful program,” Ateneo High School principal Carmela Oracion said in her memo.
