Four-peat-seeking Ateneo de Manila University cruised past University of the East to inch closer to a Final Four twice-to-beat advantage.
Graduating hitter Marck Espejo took a backseat in his scoring role as he allowed Ron Medalla to take the spotlight in the three-time defending champion Ateneo de Manila University’s emphatic 25-18, 25-22, 25-17, sweep of University of the East in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Wednesday.
The four-time Most Valuable Player scored 15 points but it was Medalla, a product of UE’s high school volleyball program, that did most of the damage as the Blue Eagles secured at least a playoff for a Final Four twice-to-beat advantage.
Medalla uncorked 18 kills and an ace for 19 points while adding 10 digs for Ateneo, which tied archrival and final elimination round assignment National University with an 11-2 win-loss slate.
Gian Glorioso added 11 markers while skipper Kar Baysa had eight points for the Katipunan-based squad, which blasted 51 kills off setter Ish Polvorosa’s 35 excellent sets.
Ateneo will close its elims campaign on Sunday.
The Red Warriors dropped their 13th straight game in as many outings.
Bom Patacsil, Angelu Alba and Kim Adriano had seven points each for UE.
