Striker Matthew Custodio had his hand on a couple of big plays Thursday morning as his De La Salle University Green Archers shot down the NU Bulldogs, 2-1 in an important late-season matchup at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
With both sides still fighting for a spot in the Final Four of the UAAP Season 80 Men's Football tournament, the maximum three points was crucial to both sides' chances.
Early in the first half Custodio had his hand on DLSU's first goal, finding Christian Zubiri for the opener in the 12th minute.
NU, who had beaten DLSU in their first round encounter, found a way to pull even after Simplicio Mantal salvaged a header in the 32nd minute.
Midway through the second half, Custodio again contributed to a DLSU goal, this time taking matters into his own hands as he blasted through the NU defense for the go-ahead-goal in the 62nd minute.
NU could not manage another equalizer down the stretch and DLSU held on for the crucial win.
After getting the maximum three points, DLSU slides into the third spot with 20 points, and could hold on to it, depending on the outcome of UE and UST's upcoming matchup.
As it stands, UST sits at fourth with 19 points, while UE isn't too far behind with 16 points.
NU remains at 16 points, but will only have one match left, and can finish with 19 points at the most.
