UAAP 80 Men’s Football: UST secures Final Four berth
UST players celebrate as UE players lay heartbroken after the Growling Tigers eliminate the Red Warriors from Final Four contention.

University of Santo Tomas basically decided the UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football Final Four cast, Thursday afternoon after beating University of the East, 2-1, at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Fighting for their playoff lives, UE came out aggressive and got on the board first, with Jasper Absalon laying it off to Kent Galaura for the goal in just the eighth minute of action.

In the second half, Gino Clarino put UST back in the game after tipping in an attempt in the 55th minute.

Down the stretch, a couple of UE’s offensive sets were ruled as offside. The second offside call, a rebound goal by Mar Diano after UST keeper Zaldy Abraham lost the handle of the ball, drew the ire of UE head coach Fitch Florence Arboleda.

The disallowed goal would come back to haunt the Red Warriors, as John De Castro knocked in a header in the 88th minute to put UST ahead.

UE couldn’t manage an equalizer to save their season and UST held on for the 2-1 win, and most importantly, secured their spot in the post season.

“Deserving sila, especially in the second half,” UST head coach Marjo Allado said of boys after the comeback win. “Yung panalo na ito, come from behind, malaking bagay sa amin kasi naka [pasok na kami sa Final Four], playing for positioning na lang.”

With the win, UST improves to 22 points and not only secures their spot in the Final Four, but also De La Salle University’s.

DLSU, who improved to 20 points after a win over National University earlier in the day, sit at the fourth spot.

With just one match left, NU and UE, both with 16 points, can only finish with a maximum of 19 points and have been eliminated from contention.
