"I’d like to say thank you to UP fans. Actually they’ve been with us when we were losing. When we’re winning, they’re with us," --- Godfrey Okumu on UP diehards.
The University of the Philippines wrapped up another tournament Saturday, taking care of the University of the East in four sets at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.
UP finished the UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball tournament with a 6-8 record on the strength of a three-game winning run.
And while the Lady Maroons actually finished with a worse record now than last year, Season 80 was actually better than Season 79.
Because the UP Lady Maroons went out fighting that's why.
"Laban. We are the fighting maroons so they fought well. I believe coming next season, we’ll still continue fighting," head coach Godfrey Okumu said.
"I trust this team. I love the players and I believe they’ll get the work done always," he added.
The Kenyan coach noted how the Lady Maroons improved on from round 1 to round 2.
However, he also noted it's not enough.
"When we started it was zero. That's how we started, from zero. On a scale of 1-10, the first round we ended at four," head coach Godfrey Okumu said.
"But the second round, I'll put that at 70 percent. So still, we are not there yet. We are still growing. With this result, I’d say 70 percent. Or 69," he added.
With the season ending, Okumu took tike to thank UP's real MVPs for the year.
"I’d like to say thank you to UP fans. Actually they’ve been with us when we were losing," he said.
"When we’re winning, they’re with us. And I think in this game, they are the heroes, then the players come in second. So I hoped and I wished we should’ve won 3-0 but 3-1 is still a good result. It’s done. They finished strong and it’s time for party," Okumu added.
