Tots Carlos and Isa Molde delivered at crunch time as University of the Philippines closed their campaign in the 80th UAAP women’s tournament on a high note with a 14-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23, win over University of the East Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The Lady Maroons came from behind in the last two frames to seal their sixth win in 14 games and third straight to wrap the season.
“We wanted to finish strong, but today, it wasn’t that strong. I was thinking of a 3-0 win because of the way they were playing,” said UP coach Godfrey Okumu of Kenya.
“I’d like to say thank you to UP fans. Actually they’ve been with us when we were losing. When we’re winning, they’re with us,” he added. “And I think in this game, they are the heroes, then the players come in second. So I hoped and I wished we should’ve won 3-0 but 3-1 is still a good result. It’s done. They finished strong and it’s time for party.”
Molde waxed-hot in the closing stretch of the fourth frame sealing a 5-0 scoring spurt to turn a 17-20 deficit to a 22-20 lead. The Lady Warriors fought back to knot the set at 23 but Carlos smashed back-to-back crosscourt hits to seal the 2-hour duel.
Molde finished with 19 points off 14 attacks, four aces and a kill block while Carlos had 14 markers for the Diliman-based squad, who in the third frame erased a 16-21 deficit with a blistering rally.
UE ended the season with a 2-12 slate with graduating hitter Shaya Adorador closing her collegiate career with 15 points.
Mary Ann Mendrez scored 13 while Judith Abil got 12 markers for the Lady Warriors.
