UAAP VOLLEYBALL: UST forces playoff for last semis berth
University of Sto. Tomas forced a playoff for the last Final Four seat after a four-set victory over Adamson University.

Jayvee Sumagaysay rescued University of Sto. Tomas from an early exit after leading the Tigers to a 25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 25-17, win over Adamson University to force a playoff for the last Final Four berth in the 80th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Blue Eagle gym inside Ateneo de Manila University campus.

Sumagaysay poured 20 points, firing 10 kills, with eight blocks and a pair of aces for UST, which tied its victim at 6-8 win-loss slate.

The win kept the Tigers, who had 13 kill blocks to highlight their solid net defense, in the hunt for the semis no. 4 spot.

Tyrone Carodan had 14 markers while Manuel Medina and Arnold Bautista chipped in 11 points each for the Espana-based squad.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines closed its campaign on a high note with a 25-20, 22-25, 25-7, 25-18, victory over listless University of the East.

Wendel Miguel bid farewell to his alma mater with 22 points coming off 17 kills, four aces and a kill block while Jerry Earl San Pedro had 15 markers for the Maroons. John Millete and John Mark Castillo added 14 and 11 points, respectively, for UP, which ended the season with a 4-10 slate.

Clifford Inoferio got 10 points for the Red Warriors, who had a winless season.

Paolo Pablico and Philip Yude finished with 17 and 10 points, respectively, for the Falcons.

In case idle De La Salle University (5-8) pulls off a win over Far Eastern University on Sunday there will be a three-way tie at 6-8.

In this scenario, the two teams with the lowest earned match points will figure in a do-or-die match where the winner will face the team with the superior match points in another playoff for the semis No. 4 seed.

Start of the playoff is set on Wednesday.
