University of the East interim head coach Rod Roque announced the appointment Ray Karl Dimaculangan as mentor of the Lady Warriors in Season 81.
University of the East interim head coach Rod Roque will step down from his post to give way to incoming UAAP Season 81 Lady Warriors mentor Ray Karl Dimaculangan.
Roque formally announced Saturday the appointment of the former University of Sto. Tomas standout after UE closed its Season 80 campaign with a 25-14, 22-25, 23-25, 23-25, loss to University of the Philippines at the Blue Eagle Gym.
“Si Coach Karl Dimaculangan, siya na coach. Yung nag-aassistant sa akin, ginawa ko na rin siyang coach,” said Roque, will be the team’s consultant next season.
“Ginawa ko na yung contract niya actually. Now, I will act as consultant kasi ayaw ng management bitawan ko women’s, actually they wanted me to be the coach na permanent, sabi ko ‘Teka muna po I will think about it first, I’ll recommend a coach muna then I’ll act as consultant.’”
Dimaculangan is the brother of women’s national team setter Rhea Dimaculangan and a part of the four-peat Tigers squad that dominated the league from 2007 to 2011. He won three straight Best Server awards from Season 70 to 72 and was named Season 71 Most Valuable Player.
“Iinakita na sa akin ng bagong coach ang training program and [it] is very impressive and I hope ma-live up to the expectation yung remaining members ng team,” said Roque, whose squad will lose graduating hitter Shaya Adorador next year.
Roque, UE’s representative to the UAAP Board, replaced resigned coach Francis Vicente after five games into the season. Under Roque, the Lady Warriors won back-to-back games against Adamson University and University of Sto. Tomas – the school’s first against the Tigresses since the start of the Final Four era in 1994.
Roque posted a 2-7 win-loss record in his short stint as head coach.
