University of the East capped off their UAAP Season 80 Men’s football campaign with a season-ending 3-1 win over De La Salle University, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Striker Mar Diano came out hot for the Red Warriors in the first half, drawing first blood in the 15th minute and then beat out his defenders before blasting the ball into the back of the net in the 26th minute for a 2-0 lead.
The Final Four-bound Green Archers managed to pull one back before halftime, courtesy of a Nicko Villacin conversion in the 31st minute.
Early in the second half, DLSU found themselves in prime position to pull even after UE gave up a foul inside the penalty box.
Green Archers striker Matthew Custodio stepped up to take the shot, but ended up sending the ball way over the crossbar.
Midway through the final 45 minutes of action, Mark Lerion added to the UE lead with a volley that went over the DLSU keeper’s head and into the back of the net.
“Sobrang thankful ako na nagtrabaho yung mga bata ngayon,” said UE head coach Fitch Florence Arboleda. “Although talagang hindi pa siguro namin time for the Final Four. Maybe next year, we’ll be among the top four teams.”
Arboleda and the Red Warriors, while ultimately wound up just missing out on the post season, had themselves an impressive turnaround in Season 80.
Coming from a Season 79 wherein they finished at seventh place, the Red Warriors were in the running for a playoff spot up until their second-to-the-last match of the year
“Hopefully mag tuloy-tuloy yung ganitong progression ng team, and at the same time sana makakuha ako ng players na mag-fifill up dun sa mga mawawala.”
Jo Mallen, Stephane Dagaraga, and Alberto Echin all played their final match for UE.
WIth the win, UE closes out Season 80 with six wins, one draw, and seven losses for 19 points and can possibily finish fifth or sixth, their highest since finishing fifth back in UAAP Season 76.
DLSU ends the eliminations with six wins, two draws, and six losses for 20 points. With the loss, University of Santo Tomas, who can still finish the season with 25 points, locks up the third seed in the Final Four, while DLSU will finish at fourth.
