Defending champions Ateneo de Manila picked up their tenth win of the season after surviving Far Eastern University 5-4, in a high-scoring matchup Sunday morning at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Much like their first round encounter that ended in a 4-3 win for Ateneo, this match caught fire pretty early.

Koko Gaudiel opened up the scoring for the Blue Eagles, converting in just the fifth minute of action, while Sam Lim doubled the lead in the 18th minute.

The Tamaraws responded in the 33rd minute, with Donggyu Jung finding Marole Bugnay for FEU’s first goal of the match.

Less than ten minutes later, Gaudiel doubled his output, recovering and scoring off a missed save in the 41st minute.

Just before the midgame break, the Tams pulled one back again, with Gilbert Mendoza Jr.’s free kick recovered and converted to make it 3-2 after 45 minutes.

The second half would feature nearly just as much action, as Christian Castillo added to Ateneo’s lead in the 54th minute with a high header.

Literally just a couple of minutes later, John Renz Saldivar answered back for FEU, tipping it over Ateneo keeper Gavin Rosario to trim the lead back to just a single goal.

Jarvey Gayoso, the league’s leading scorer, played facilitator this time around, finding Ryan Haosen with a nifty back-heel pass for the 71st minute goal to restore Ateneo’s two-goal lead, 5-3.

FEU fought until the very last minute, with Saldivar scoring his second goal of the matc two minutes into injury time to make it a 5-4 final scoreline in favor of Ateneo.

The win puts Ateneo at 31 points, just two behind league-leaders University of the Philippines.

The top seed will be up for grabs when Ateneo and UP figure in the final match of the eliminations on Thursday, April 19th.

FEU remains at seventh place with 10 points.
