UAAP 80 Men's Volleyball: 'Wag natin kalimutan, magaling si Ish' - FEU head coach Rey Diaz

“Binantayan namin si Marck, dinistribute naman ni Ish sa ibang attacker, kaya medyo mahirap talaga tapatan ang Ateneo, dalawa yung nag-dadala eh.”
After being on the receiving end of a 55-point explosion from reigning UAAP Men’s Volleyball MVP and Ateneo de Manila star Marck Espejo, the gameplan for Far Eastern University in their do-or-die UAAP Season 80 Men’s Volleyball Semifinals match was clear pretty much simple:
Stop Marck Espejo.
To an extent, the Tamaraws managed to do so in their four-set loss to Ateneo, Wednesday afternoon at the San Juan Arena.
FEU held Espejo to just 37 points, 18 below his previous outing.
“Sumunod naman sila, all-out naman, tapos yung usapan naman na i-stop si Espejo, nagagawa kaya lang hindi consistent eh.” said FEU head coach Rey Diaz.
With all things considered however, it was still an excellent offensive game from Espejo, enough to lead the Blue Eagles to their fifth-straight trip to the Finals.
While indeed, Espejo is Ateneo’s main offensive threat, Diaz reminds everyone that Ateneo also has Ish Polvorosa, who just happens to be a four-time UAAP Best Setter.
When you get the chance to lock Marck down, Diaz says that Polvorosa will find a way to get others going.
“Magaling talaga si Espejo eh, pero wag natin kakalimutan, magaling kasi si Ish eh.” Diaz said. “Binantayan namin si Marck, dinistribute naman ni Ish sa ibang attacker, kaya medyo mahirap talaga tapatan ang Ateneo, dalawa yung nag-dadala eh.”
Polvorosa finished with 40 excellent sets.
Karl Baysa, Ron Medalla, and Chumason Njigha finished with 8, 9, and 7 points respectively.
“Mayroon silang experiensyadong attacker tsaka setter.” Diaz said of Espejo and Polvorosa, who are on their way to their fifth-straight Finals series together.
