Far Eastern University's quest for its 30th women's crown and an end to a nine-year title drought begins.
The first step to end a nine-year title drought for Far Eastern University begins Saturday when the Lady Tamaraws collide with grand slam-seeking De La Salle University in the UAAP Season 80 best-of-three women’s volleyball Finals at the Big Dome.
Graduating hitter Bernadeth Pons vowed to go all-out in the match set at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
“Siyempre ma-expect niyo na mas ibibigay ko pa rin lahat, all-out na kasi last year ko na din, tapos last chance na din namin,” said Pons, who is looking to deliver FEU's 30th title in her swan song.
The open spiker dropped 17 points with 19 excellent receptions and 16 digs in the Lady Tams’ four-set win over Ateneo de Manila University in the Final Four to advance in the championship round for the first time since Season 71.
“Nakuha na namin 'yung goal namin na makapasok sa Finals, so isa pa ulit, 'yung goal na makuha namin 'yung championship,” said Pons, whose squad broke the six-year trend of the Ateneo-La Salle Finals rivalry.
This is also the first time for the Morayta-based squad to face the Lady Spikers in the Finals since DLSU knocked the then Rachel Anne Daquis-bannered FEU off the throne.
The Lady Tams dropped all of their elimination round meetings against DLSU, but the Lady Spikers needed five sets both times to turn back the feisty FEU side.
Pons will be backed by an equally dangerous crew led by opposite hitter Toni Rose Basas, Celine Domingo, Kyle Negrito, Heather Guino-o and libero Kyla Atienza.
