UP and UST battle for the UAAP Season 80 Men's Football Championship
University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas will leave everything on the pitch in the one-off UAAP Season 80 UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football Finals on Thursday, May 3rd at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Kick-off is at 3:00 PM.
The last time the two teams crossed paths for the championship, the Fighting Maroons, with Jinggoy Valmayor leading the way, defeated the Growling Tigers, 1-0, in the 2011-12 season in a campaign where they conceded only a single goal all throughout.
"It has been a while. I'm very excited. UST played so well in their game against Ateneo. I think it's gonna be an exciting match," said coach Anto Gonzales after UP eliminated De La Salle in the Final Four.
Gunning for a record 36th championship, the Tigers are determined to regain their lost glory and give their seven graduating players led by Steven Anotado and Gino Clariño a grand send-off.
"I know UP is a strong team. Kumpleto," said coach Marjo Allado, who was then an assistant to Nonoy Carpio when the Tigers last won the crown in the 2006-07 season.
Behind King Miyagi, JB Borlongan and rookie sensation Fidel Tacardon leading the charge, the Maroons, with 11 wins and four draws have never lost a match this season.
"Kailangang manalo kami sa championship para maibalik agad yun (glory). Kailangan kami ang mag-champion and then maimprove ang program ng UST," said Allado.
In their elimination round head-to-head, UP and UST battled to a 1-1 stalemate in the first round before the Diliman-based side cruised to a 4-0 win in the second round.
"Once they (Tigers) come together and they play at the top of their game, they are very difficult to beat. So that's why I'm looking forward to the match. Now na nagka-second wind ang UST. After starting very well but in the middle medyo naging poor yung performance nila but now they are peaking at the right time," said Gonzales, who is seeking to give UP its 18th title overall.
