“Sobrang proud ako sa mga teammates ko, sa mga coaches, sa lahat kasi lumaban kami hanggang dulo.”
Far Eastern University’s storybook season came to a close Wednesday afternoon at the Araneta Coliseum after falling to defending champions De La Salle University in game two of the UAAP Season 80 Women’s Volleyball Finals.
The Lady Spikers swept FEU in both Finals matches to claim their eleventh women’s championship and their third three-peat run.
While it was a dominant display for DLSU, Lady Tamaraws star Bernadeth Pons couldn’t be more proud of the heights her team reached this season.
It was, after all, FEU’s first trip back to the finals in nine seasons, dating back to the days of Lady Tamaraws legend Rachel Anne Daquis.
“Masaya ako sa ano man yung naabot namin this year so sobrang proud ako this year sa team namin although hindi namin nakuha yung finals, yung goal namin.”
Pons hopes that while it they ultimately came up short this season, it becomes a spark for seasons to come for FEU.
“So hopefully yung experience na ito is stepping stone sa mga natitira next year to bounce back.”
The graduating Pons finished with a team-high 17 markers.
“Sobrang proud ako sa mga teammates ko, sa mga coaches, sa lahat kasi lumaban kami hanggang dulo.” Pons added.
In her final season, Pons averaged over 15 points per game and was considered as one of the top MVP candidates in Season 80, especially among the fans.
For the 21-year old Talisay, Negros native the recognition was a testament to her hard work throughout the year.
“Masaya ako and na-overwhelm ako kasi yung mga napapansin nila sa akin, it means na maganda yung pinapakita ko so masaya ako na dahil na-appreciate nila yung effort ko.”
Now, as she bids goodbye to FEU, Pons knows that aside from hopefully leaving a catalyst for successful future seasons, she’s left behind an example to her teammates that extends outside of the volleyball court.
“For me, naging magandang example kami for them kasi hindi lang sa paglalaro ng volleyball pati sa academics. So natapos namin ang aral namin on time then nag-peperform kami ng maganda sa paglalaro namin. So yun yung mga naiwan na legacy namin sa mga teammates namin.”
