Ricci Rivero is nothing but excited to play for a passionate fanbase in UP
Ricci Rivero is all set to make the University of the Philippines’ future even brighter.
UAAP Season 80 Mythical selection Rivero bared on Friday that he has chosen to continue his collegiate career with the Fighting Maroons. “If a school is willing to give me an opportunity to keep playing in the UAAP and (keep growing) as a basketball player and as a person, then I will gratefully accept it and do everything I can do help that school win a championship,” he said in a statement.
He then continued, “I am thankful that UP has offered me a chance to continue chasing my dreams and I am honored to announce that I have accepted their invitation to join the Fighting Maroons.”
With his transfer, Rivero will have to sit out Season 81 for residency before being eligible to play three more years for State U starting in Season 82.
For now, the 19-year-old Rivero can continue concentrating on his stint with the Gilas cadets.
When he does finally don the maroon and green, he will join fellow national team members Juan Gomez de Liano and Will Gozum as part of UP’s nothing but promising core for at least the next three years.
In Season 82, he will simply step in the shoes of Paul Desiderio, another Gilas cadet, who will have graduated by then.
As it turns out, those three played a big part in pushing their current and future teammate in the direction of Diliman.
As Rivero himself shared, “Family, friends, and Gilas teammates were raving about how supportive the UP community was. They told me that UP fans were crazy about the team and were there for them win or lose.”
He then continued, “I saw that too when I played against them, sobrang ingay nila and nakaka-excite maglaro para sa kanila.”
