Juan GDL and Ricci Rivero will now be playing together for two different teams

Juan Gomez de Liano and Ricci Rivero have been playing together in the Gilas cadets for almost two months.

Now, it has been revealed that the two will still be teammates for a different Pilipinas team – that is, Unibersidad ng Pilipinas.

Rivero announced last Friday that he is all set to transfer to UP – joining Juan GDL and making the future even brighter over there.

For Season 80 Rookie of the Year Juan GDL, that is nothing but an exciting prospect.

In fact, he likened it to a seismic shift that happened in the NBA. “It’s big for us, him joining our program. It’s like KD joining the Warriors,” he said, referring to how Kevin Durant joined up with a 73-win Golden State squad en route to winning his first-ever championship.

With Juan GDL joining forces with brother Javi, Bright Akhuetie, Paul Desiderio, Will Gozum, and Jun Manzo, the Fighting Maroons are already being seen as one of the top contenders for Season 81.

And in Season 82, they look like they will still be top contenders as though Desiderio will have graduated, Rivero will have finished his residency and will be eligible to play by then. “Ricci has the skill, work ethic, and character we look for in players who wear State U across their chests,” head coach Bo Perasol shared.

He then continued, “We did our due diligence and it’s clear to us that Ricci will be an asset to the team and the university.”

Indeed, with Juan GDL and Rivero leading the way, it looks like there is nowhere to go but up for State U.

Juan GDL made it a point to remind that they still have a lot of work to get there, though. “We got a lot of talented players, but we have to improve our chemistry and how we trust one another,” he remarked.

If they do just that, could State U’s more than two decade-long playoff drought turn into a streak of Final Four appearances?
