Coach Tab reminds everybody that Ateneo’s real battle is the UAAP
Head coach Tab Baldwin and Ateneo still have their sights set on the UAAP
Ateneo de Manila University made the country proud in the 2018 William Jones Cup.
With a 5-3 record and a fourth-place finish, the young Blue Eagles stood tall in each and every match-up against national and club teams from other countries.
For head coach Tab Baldwin, however, the reigning kings of the UAAP still have their sights set on one thing – defending their crown.
“While we can, perhaps in the short-term, bask in the glory of a job well done, we shouldn’t drop our guard. We’re excited for the UAAP season because we belive in the pursuit of excellence,” he said in their homecoming lunch hosted by team backer Chooks-to-Go on Tuesday in Ortigas.
That is especially true as the one-time UAAP champion coach sees much room for improvement for his wards. “I see a lot of weaknesses. I don’t know if other teams already see it, but I suspect they do,” he shared.
He then continued, “As long as I see them, I know that we still have to work on that. We will always try to reach our potential.”
And so, Baldwin will give his boys a one-week break before gathering them back inside the gym for their final preparations for the looming UAAP Season 81.
Asked what’s in store for Ateneo when they get back to training, he answered, “Close the doors, sequester the team in our practice session and push through with our final preparations.”
He then continued, “We will beat each other up pretty intensively. We want our opponents in the UAAP to be softer than our practices.”
Already impressive in their Jones Cup run, imagine the Blue Eagles getting even better.
The UAAP better watch out.
