UP's Bright Akhuetie decried Muntinlupa's actions during their tuneup game
Bright Akhuetie found himself at the center of a free-for-all fight between the University of the Philippines and Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball Team Muntinlupa last Saturday.
In a video shared by a source, Dhon Reverente of the Cagers was seen to have crossed paths with Fighting Maroon Akhuetie sometime in the second quarter of their game inside Ayala Alabang Village in Muntinlupa.
From there, Akhuetie stopped moving and appeared to be favoring his stomach area before rushing at Reverente.
The two then traded punches and not long after, witnesses said that both benches cleared.
According to State U head coach Bo Perasol, after the free-for-all was broken up, both sides agreed not to continue with the game. “It’s just usual action amidst a heated game. All part of the game,” he said.
He then continued, “In fact, we both agreed na wag na lang ituloy para wala nang any untoward incidents na mangyari.”
Coach Bo went on to say that what was important was that the fight was stopped not long after it was started. “The usual ang nangyari – tirahan, tinamaan, bumawi. Nothing extraordinary,” he said.
He then continued, “Naawat din naman agad.”
According to another source from UP, even before the free-for-all fight erupted, the Cagers were “not just being physical, they were playing dirty already.”
For Akhuetie, of course, that shouldn’t have been the case at all. “We play sports for love, passion, (and) peace – not to hurt each other. I really don’t understand why some of these guys and coaches feel intimidated and instruct players to go hurt someone on the other team,” he shared.
He then continued, “I’m a foreigner here. Don’t make me less human.”
Akhuetie hails from Nigeria, but has been living in the Philippines for almost five years.
ABS-CBN Sports is still trying to get in contact with Muntinlupa as of press time.
